Below are a series of legal resources that may be applicable to your situation.
Legal Resources:
York Collaborative Practice – If you are interested in pursuing a Collaborative law approach, York Collaborative Practice has information available and answers questions that you may have. Leonardo is a member of this Collaborative law group that covers York Region.
York Region Law Association – If you are residing in or have a matter in the Newmarket court, the York Region Law Association website provides general information and resources about legal issues in York Region. Leonardo is a member of the York Region Law Association.
Law Society of Ontario – Governs lawyers and paralegals, provides a directory of licenced lawyers in Ontario, as well as additional resources for the public.
Ontario Bar Association – A branch of the Canadian Bar Association, the website provides general information, resources, and updates on legal issues for Ontario. Leonardo is a member of the Ontario Bar Association.
Canadian Bar Association – The Canadian Bar Association website provides general information, resources, and updates on legal issues across Canada. Leonardo is a member of the Canadian Bar Association.
Family Responsibility Office – Information and resources about the Family Responsibility Office, which collects, distributes, and enforces court-ordered child and spousal support payments.
Child Support Guidelines Online Calculator – A child support table from the Government of Canada, Department of Justice to assist in looking up possible child support. Annual Gross Income of the paying parent, number of children, and province of residence is required. This resource is not law, but is available simply as a guide.
Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines – A Government of Canada resource to assist in the estimation of possible spousal support. This resource is not law, but is available simply as a guide.
Legal Aid Ontario – Leonardo does NOT accept legal aid. If this is a service you require, please contact Legal Aid Ontario and they can assist you.
Community Resources:
York Children’s Aid Society – Information, resources, and links to various programs which work to protect and support children and families within the York Region who are in need.
Catholic Children’s Aid Society – Information, resources, and links to various programs which work to protect and support children and families, with Catholic pastoral care resources also available.
Jewish Child and Family Services – A multi-service agency working to provide safety, security, and support for Jewish families and the Jewish community throughout the GTA.
Come to Agreement/My2Families – An online tool designed to assist families who have gone through, or are going through divorce, work together and stay focused for the benefit of everyone, especially the children. Online tools can involve family members and professionals, with access to mutual calendars, documents, and a communication forum.
Federal Statutes:
Divorce Act – For those who are married, all custody and access issues, as well as all child and spousal support issues.
Provincial Statutes:
Family Law Act – Child and spousal support issues for those who are married. All property issues fall within the Provincial jurisdiction and therefore are dealt with in the Family Law Act, whether a couple is married or not.
Important Note: Even though the Family Law Act is a provincial statute, non-married couples are not eligible for a division of property under Part I of the Family Act.
Children’s Law Reform Act – Custody and access issues for those who are not married.
Family Responsibility and Support Arrears Enforcement Act – Support Orders, Support Deduction Orders, and Enforcement.
Partition Act – Partition or sale of land in Ontario by anyone who holds an interest in the property.
Pension Benefits Act – Valuation, transfer, and division of pension plans.
Succession Law Reform Act – Wills and the posthumous succession and division of property and estates.
Arbitration Act – Procedure, jurisdiction, limitations, and remedies surrounding the Arbitration process.
Change of Name Act – The application, procedure, and limitations of changing a forename or surname, whether it be of a child or an adult.
